MAIBANG: The Haflong Municipal Board has released a notification asking the people of the region to take steps towards controlling the breeding of mosquitos in a bid to ensure that vector-borne diseases can be brought under control in the district.

In a notification published by the Executive officer of the Haflong Municipal Board, he asked the people to ensure that there is no water logging in their vicinity. It also requested the public to take steps towards prevention of mosquito bites when indoors or outdoors.

“ The executive officer hereby requested the inhabitants of Haflong Municipal area to ensure that there will be no water logging in drains, open terraces, construction sites, dumping sites etc. and clean water containers on a regular basis and wear protective clothing like long sleeves, invest in a mosquito net, dispose of water from flower pots, coconut shells, old tyres, drainage water etc.” mentioned the notification.

This step was taken by the authorities after the Joint Director of the Health Services for Dima Hasao had written to them regarding the incidents of Dengue, malaria and other vector-borne diseases. Mosquitoes which breed in stagnant water bodies are the main carriers of Dengue, Malaria, Japanese Encephalitis and other diseases, which has been a major concern in the district.

Although the number of infections has come down in recent times, the number of vector-borne diseases in the state is still not fully under control. According to the reports published by the Health Department of the state, there are a total of 21 active cases of Dengue in the state and 3 active cases of Malaria. However, there are no active cases of Japanese Encephalitis.

According to the report published on 6 October by the concerned department officials, Karbi Anglong has the highest number of active dengue cases in the country and the number stands at 15. Dibrugarh is the second on the list with 3 active cases. Sivsagar, Chirang and Jorhat districts have reported one active case each. The same report mentioned that the Nagaon district has 3 active cases of Malaria.
