Guwahati: Assam health and finance minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Kamakhya Devalaya atop Nilachal Hills in Guwahati after the 'Nibritti' ritual of the Ambubachi fair. 'Nibritti' ritual is one in which the idol is traditionally said to be purified and the 'angavastram' cloth removed.

Visited Kamakhya at the end of the nibritti in Ambubachi. Walked around the 4 corners of the temple which is closed due to Covid-19 and prayed for world peace", Sarma wrote.

Sarma's visit came at a time when the temple has closed its doors to visitors owing to the pandemic situation in the state. The Ambubachi began at 7.53.15 am (pravritti) on June 22 (Monday) and conclude (Nivritti) on June 25 (Thursday) at 8.16.55 pm.

The devalaya, usually thronged by lakhs amid the fair, wore a deserted look following the decision taken by the Kamakhya Devalaya Managing Committee not to allow devotees to the temple during the Ambubachi. The managing committee is also not going to hold any mela (fair) during the Ambunachi in the wake of the corona pandemic.
