Guwahati: A man has lost his life after a herd of wild elephants allegedly attacked him in Nagaon district on May 5 and this gruesome incident comes despite repeated attempts to stop the man-elephant conflicts in Assam.
The incident took place in the Dhansila area of the Nagaon district and it occurred when the victim was doing chores in front of his house when the elephants came. However, no other family members were present at his residence at the time of his residence.
The deceased has been identified as Putul Bauri.
The forest department was immediately informed about this incident, following which they arrived at the site of the incident and sent the body of the deceased to the hospital for autopsy.
The incident unravelled when the herd of elephants came from the forest area to the human-inhabited area in search of food on May 5 and things started to get tense when the elephants reached a densely populated area.
Tragedy struck when Bauri made an effort to chase the herd away but his attempt went in vain as he instead got attacked by them.
He made an attempt to chase the herd back to the forest but instead ended up on the receiving end and lost his life as there were no others present.
According to officials, the elephants frequently visit the area where the incident took place in search of food.
Earlier, in a similar incident, a 40-year-old man was squashed to death by an elephant at Sessa Nagaon village in the Dibrugarh district of Assam on April 12.
The deceased had been identified as Megnath Gowala, who hailed from Lezai area.
The incident unravelled when the man went out to graze his cattle early in the morning and suddenly, he came across a wild elephant. Thereafter, the elephant chased him and trampled him to death. The police came to the site of the incident and took his body for post-mortem.
