HOJAI: Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday took a bold decision of suspending Deputy Commissioner Anupam Choudhury and Additional Deputy Commissioner Raktim Baruah of Hojai District in Assam for misbehaving with a 60-year-old man.

According to sources, a man in his sixties with a pillion was coming from the wrong side of the road when the convoy of the top officials of the Hojai district intercepted them and the two officials misbehaved with them. It is also alleged that both the officials were intoxicated during this whole incident.

According to another source, both the officials were returning from Lumding to Shankardev Nagar, the headquarters of the Hojai district when they saw the man coming from the wrong side of the road on a scooter in Assam's Lanka which is under the Hojai district. As the area is prone to accidents the officials stopped the scooter and then started misbehaving with them. CCTV footage show ADC Raktim Baruah chasing and hitting the pillion rider and grievously injuring the rider.

The pillion rider was immediately rushed to Hojai Civil Hospital for further treatment.

After the incident, the family members of the victim let the Chief Minister of Assam know about the atrocities the two top officials of the Hojai district unleashed on the sixty-year-old man. The Chief Minister after coming to know of the incident immediately released the two officials from their duties.

The Chief Minister of Assam had earlier said in a meeting that the police and the administrative officers should never misbehave with the public as they are employed to serve the public and not rule on them.

According to a source, Deputy Commissioner Anupam Choudhury was known for his developmental works in the district and is an able officer but yesterday's incident has not only maligned the image that he had created over the years but also has brought shame to the service.
