TINSUKIA: Barekuri in the Tinsukia district, which is home to the Hoolock Gibbon, has lost another member of the gibbon community following the death of its oldest male species on Monday night at Dighalhaku village. The hollock gibbon was cremated in the village in presence of villagers and forest officials on Tuesday.

According to Diplob Chutia, a hoolock gibbon conservationist of Barekuri, the male gibbon was suffering from some ailments. Though this was reported to the forest officials, including PCCF&HOFF, no veterinary doctor paid any head to his pleas, Chutia alleged. The number of hoolock gibbons is fast declining despite conservational efforts by the villagers, with only 21 species surviving in 22 locations under Barekuri.
