DIBRUGARH: Once again, illegal settlers constructed their little homes near the Brahmaputra River in Kacharighat, Dibrugarh, which is in a short distance from the Dibrugarh SP office. Despite being aware of the settlement’s vulnerability to Dibrugarh safety, the district authorities took no action to evacuate the Dibrugarh Town Protection (DTP) dike.
According to a survey done by “The Sentinel,” many unauthorized little huts were built in the Dibrugarh district of Kacharighat’s Joggers’ Park. There are a lot of criminal operations in those specific places, according to sources.
The district administration, in collaboration with the local people created a park that was subsequently dubbed joggers’ park. However, the park was washed away during flood.
The joggers’ park was constructed spending several lakhs of rupees but now it has been transformed into homes of illegal settlers.
The local people of Dibrugarh demanded of the district administration to immediately evict the settlers to clear the place.
“How can illegal settlers built huts in the joggers’ park? The entire area has become a den of anti-social elements. Despite several requests, the district administration is not doing nothing to clear the place,” said a senior citizen.
Talking to The Sentinel, Pradip Das, Executive Engineer of Water Resources Department, Dibrugarh said, “Many times we have evicted the settlers but all our efforts goes in vain as after some days the illegal huts are rebuilt by the illegal settlers. We had asked them to leave when we were working there, but a few days later they returned.”
“The place has become a hub of anti-social activities. We have submitted reports to the district administration and police department for immediate steps to be taken for clearing the area,” Das said.
