GUWAHATI: The Excise department of Assam carried out a search and destroy operation against illicit liquor manufacturing units of the Amguri region of the state.
The personnel with the state excise department of the state carried out this operation in the Joradhora, Rodghaiting, Jehenia, Deuroja and Pulibor localities of Amguri in Assam with spades, machete and lathis.
The team from the excise department carried out the operation and searched and found containers of illicit liquor hidden underground in bamboo groves and backwards from the people. The teams discovered and destroyed over 1500 “sulai pas” used to make the local liquor. Six illicit liquor manufacturing units were destroyed by the officials during this operation.
It is important to note that people involved in the making of illicit liquor in unhealthy conditions of the tea gardens and it has been adversely affecting the health of the people of the region. And these people involved continue to find new and innovative ways to produce and sell their products.
Also, large amounts of illicit liquor were destroyed by the officials but no arrests were made in this regard.
In a separate incident, Sonari Police carried out an operation against the smuggling of alcohol from Arunachal Pradesh into Assam. A total of 143 bottles of alcohol from Arunachal Paresh were seized during this operation. One Amul Gogoi, a resident of Miripathar was apprehended in relation to this lot of illicit liquor. Sonari Police had acted based on specific information in the Miripathar region of Sonari to seize the consignment of alcohol from Arunachal. Amul Gogoi was allegedly involved in the smuggling of illicit liquor for a long time and a case has been registered against him at the Sonari Police Station. Alcohol is smuggled from the neighbouring state to Assam as it is comparatively cheaper in the state of Arunachal Pradesh.
