The Department of Assamese, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) on Tuesday organized an interactive session with Dr. Hiren Gohain, the prominent intellectual figure and writer of Assam.

LAKHIMPUR: The Department of Assamese, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) on Tuesday organized an interactive session with Dr. Hiren Gohain, the prominent intellectual figure and writer of Assam. The event, which was conducted mainly focusing on the present society and education, was chaired by Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa, the Head of the Department of Assamese. Principal of the college, Dr. Biman Chandra Chetia delivered the welcome address and said that having an opportunity by the college family to exchange thoughts with Dr. Gohain is a matter of immense pleasure. “Such interactive session is required to be held in the colleges, as a platform for higher learning of intellectual concern,” he said.

In his speech, Dr Hiren Gohain highlighted how the quality of education in the current context has declined. He told everyone to understand that the society and politics are not separate from education. Expressing his respect to the mythology and history, Dr. Gohain said, “The ancient things should not be misinterpreted and represented wrongly in the interest of strengthening the present. It should also be understood by the society that all ancient things have not practical value.”

Dr. Gohain further shed light on how some forces in power do not hesitate to destroy the language and culture of Assam even the very nature of the State. He appealed to the upcoming generation to be always awake for safeguarding the nationality which is favourable for the time. In the interactive session, Rani Gohain, the spouse of Dr. Hiren Gohain, also took part. Rani Gohain is an alumnus of the North Lakhimpur College. She shared her memories in the college and explained about the educational scenario of six decades ago.

Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa said that the Rani Gohain had already made her contribution to the Assamese literature by editing two valuable books on Nirupama Bargohain and Mamoni Roisom Goswami. Dr. Rajkhowa also informed that the Department of Assamese, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) has been studying the literary creations of Dr. Gohain since 2014 and the academic department has incorporated his valuable works on nature-writing in the curriculum. Head of Department History, Dr. Atanu Gogoi interacted with Dr. Gohain about the non-scientific trend of studying history in India in the contemporary time. The office bearers of the College Students’ Union gave warm felicitation to Dr. Hiren Gohain and Rani Gohain. A large number of faculties researchers, students of North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous), including faculties from Lakhimpur Girls’ College, Lakhimpur Commerce College and Lakhimpur Telahi Kamalaboria College, prominent lawyer Nikunja Mohan Phukan, Retired Education Officer Ramesh Chandra Chutia were present in the event.
