TINSUKIA: Barekuri Paribesh Unnayan Samity, with support from Oil India Limited (OIL) Duliajan, observed a two-day International Gibbon Day at Hapjan Puroni Bihukhola in Dighalsaku village Barekuri in the Tinsukia district on October 24 and October 25.

The first day’s programme began with sighting of gibbon habitat at Barekuri followed by hoisting of the Samity’s flag by its president, Diplob Chutia. A special prayer meeting was held to pay homage to Kolia, a male gibbon that expired recently. Arun Jyoti Moran, vice-president of Asom Yuva Aayog, paid floral tributes at the portrait of Kolia. In sync with the observance of Gibbon Day art, quiz, and recitation competitions among school children were also held.

On the second day, an awareness procession was organized followed by an open meeting and a workshop. Chaired by Kamaleswar Chetia, the meeting was addressed by Professor Monjit Borthakur of Cotton University, Dr Dilip Chetry, vice-president of Aaranyak, senior journalist Hemanta Saikia, and others.

Gibbons are among the most endangered apes and among the most critically endangered of all non-human primate species. Though the current conservation status of gibbon species is alarming, the people of Barekuri are intensely conserving the last 21 gibbons thriving in the locality virtually without any government support.
