DIGBOI: The teams of the IT Department along with CBI, raided the residences of 3 giant coal trading players of Margheirta in Tinsukia district on Friday morning. The three coal traders were identified as B Ganesh of Ledo area while Sunil Gurung and Gobind Chetry of Bahbari area of Borgolai area under Margherita police station in Tinsukia district.

Backed by logistic support and a mammoth team of CRPF, the government agencies were reportedly conducting the affairs within the residential complex of the trios. Ironically, the local police personnel of Assam Police department were not seen during the raid in the morning.

According to reports, the trio were involved in running a coal syndicate besides being involved in alleged illegal coal mining in various coal fields under Margherita Coal Inda Limited. The rivalry over the alleged illegal coal being the most profitable trade was at its peak over sometime in the state of Assam besides accelerating the pace of unhealthy race for supremacy upon the trade among some of the notable legislators of Assam and their relatives.

According to a local coal trader of Margherita on the condition of unanimity, the political rivalry ahead of forthcoming Assembly election in the state was also at its peak while the raid was conducted simultaneously to check tax evasion and combat the flow of unaccounted wealth in the election.

Digboi BJP MLA Suren Phukan had earlier in the month of July and November held several illegally laden coal trucks in Digboi which subsequently were either handed over to local police for investigation or were made to return towards its source area.

According to sources, the names of several heavy weight politicians and other stakeholders involving or supporting the illegal trade are likely to surface during the investigations of the officials. The detail of the outcomes of the raid was yet to be ascertained till filing the news. The officials engaged in the task were yet to address the media houses that were kept at bay for the sake of investigations thereof. The investigation continued till filling the news.
