Guwahati: The Election Commission of India today assigned 'Ship' as the party symbol of the newly floated regional party from Assam- Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).

Addressing the media, AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi while unveiling the symbol announced that the party will be contesting the upcoming Assam Assembly Election 2021, slated to be held on March 27. He also released the registration number of the party, which is 56/161/2020-2021/PPS-1.

Announcing the release of the symbol and registration number, the party in its Twitter handle wrote:

"Good news for all the members, staff and well-wishers of Assam Jatiya Parishad. The Election Commission of India has already declared the party as a registered regional political party and has also allotted party symbol. The registration number of the team is 56/161 / 2020-2021 / PPS-1."

The party members welcoming the symbol asserted that it bears significance with the river Brahmaputra.

Turning down the exit poll predictions, Gogoi is hopeful that the regional party will emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.

Formed under the aegis of two most influential and powerful student-youth bodies- All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), AJP was the outcome of the massive anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act CAA that rocked the nation in December 2019, with its epicenter being Assam and the Northeast. The guiding ideology of the party is "Assam first, always and ever"

Last year in December, Lurinjyoti Gogoi was elected as the president of the party while Pabindra Deka and Jagadish Bhuyan were declared as the party's working president and general secretary at the first convention of the party.

Earlier in February, Akhil Gogoi led Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti's political wing Raijor Dal and AJP have officially sealed their alliance for the upcoming state assembly elections.

The Election Commission of India has recently announced the dates of the Assam Assembly Elections 2021, which will be held in three phases on March 27, April 1 and April 2. The counting of the election to the 126 seats of the Assam Assembly will take place on May 2.
