GUWAHATI: In a collaborative operation conducted by the city police and the Special Task Force (STF) Assam on a Thursday morning, law enforcement authorities successfully seized a substantial quantity of gold, amounting to over 500 grams, and apprehended four individuals involved in the smuggling operation. Among those arrested was a woman. The operation unfolded on the outskirts of Guwahati city in the region of Jorabat.

The individuals taken into custody have been identified as Inayet Ali (30), Jannat Begum (56), and Mohammad Yusuph (38), all of whom are residents of Jodhpur in the state of Rajasthan. Additionally, the authorities also detained the driver of the vehicle used in the smuggling operation, Veeru Singh (27), who hails from the East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya.

The interception and subsequent arrests were carried out based on intelligence inputs regarding potential smuggling activities in the area. The gold, in its original form, was found in a coil shape and weighed a total of 518.8 grams. The illicit cargo was discovered concealed within a vehicle bearing registration number 'ML 05N 8712'.

Investigations have revealed that the consignment of gold was being illicitly transported from Meghalaya to Rajasthan via the intercepted vehicle. The estimated market value of the seized gold is yet to be officially determined. As the authorities delve deeper into the case, they are actively pursuing leads and connections to unearth further details regarding the illegal smuggling network.
