Assam: Joint Secretary Suspended After Arrest on Charges of Bribery

GUWAHATI: The state government of Assam has placed Kisan Kumar Sharma on suspension following his arrest on charges of bribery.

Kisan Kumar Sharma was the Joint Secretary to the Home and Political Department of the Government of India. He was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 90000 late on Friday night. According to reports the bribe was meant for the renewal of a license for a security agency. This incident triggered a search procedure in his home and police recovered another Rs 49.24 lakhs in cash.

The personnel from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption from the Police Department of Assam made the arrest on Friday. On Monday, a notification was issued from the Home and Political Department of the state mentioning his suspension. The order came from the Governor of Assam and came to force from the date of his arrest.

Assam has implemented a very strict policy to prevent any form of corruption in the state machinery. As a part of this initiative to completely eradicate such malpractices, the state government has taken action on several persons in this regard.

Around a week before this incident a search was conducted at the residence of the DTO of Dibrugarh. The raid led to recovery of about Rs. 703800 in unaccounted cash from the residence of Sanjib Hazarika. Out of that Rs. 87000 was in the form of old currency from before demonetization.

The central government has also adopted a very tough position against corruption. Several legislations have also been created in this direction. Thus making the prosecution of those involved in corruption incidents get proper punishment. Measures are also in place to expand the existing laws to handle money laundering and benami transactions across the country. Even the details of accounts of a few people in Swiss banks has been released.
