Assam: Jorhat Magistrate Imposes Night Curfew in Assam-Nagaland Border

GUWAHATI: In accordance with Section 144 of the CrPC, the Jorhat District Magistrate has imposed a night curfew inside a five-kilometer zone on the Assam side of the Assam-Nagaland border in the district.

According to a District Magistrate ruling, all types of cars, people, and other moving objects are prohibited from crossing the interstate border between the hours of 8 PM and 5 AM.

In an official notification, Jorhat District magistrate informed that, “WHEREFORE, the Intelligence branch and district police occasionally receive trustworthy reports that some extremist groups are attempting to enter the state over the Nagaland Border in order to stir up disturbance in the Jorhat District.”

It also stated that , “Additionally, it has been a successful deterrent to extremist behaviour. Criminals have been exploiting the Assam-Nagaland border as a passageway when getting into and out of Jorhat district and into the neighbouring regions. They frequently use this route to carry out disruptive and illegal operations in Jorhat and other Assamese districts.”

The directive said that they were permitted to utilize the Assam-Nagaland border areas for transit and other purposes because it had been learned from a reliable source that ULFA (I) had recently added fresh volunteers to their outfit.

Meanwhile in April, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio to discuss unresolved border concerns following hours of signing a boundary accord with Arunachal Pradesh.

According to a statement from the Assam administration, Assam and Nagaland are looking into every possibility to peacefully resolve the long-running border impasse.

Following the signing of an MoU by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the boundary issue between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh was settled.
