GUWAHATI: In response to the escalating number of road accidents on National Highway 39 (NH-39) and its connecting stretch, NH-36, in Assam, the Karbi Anglong Police, in collaboration with the District Road Safety Committee, has unveiled a groundbreaking "Time Card" initiative. This innovative approach aims to address the root causes of accidents and enhance overall road safety.

Commencing this Sunday, a trial period will be initiated, focusing on the Sarihajan-Silonijan section of NH-39. During this phase, vehicles traversing this route will be issued time cards, a tool designed not only to monitor travel time but also to enforce a strict speed limit of 60 km/hr. It is noteworthy that penalties under the Motor Vehicle Act will be imposed for reaching the destination before the allocated time, emphasizing the seriousness of the initiative.

The urgency of this initiative is underscored by the Superintendent of Police, who disclosed that 79 Karbi Anglong residents, predominantly concentrated between Bokajan and Borpathar, lost their lives in road accidents in 2023 alone. Speeding emerged as the primary contributing factor to these tragic incidents.

Beyond regulating speed, the initiative encompasses a multifaceted approach to road safety. In addition to monitoring and penalizing speeding, the Karbi Anglong Police will intensify vigilance against drunk driving. Furthermore, stricter parking regulations along the highway will be implemented to mitigate potential hazards caused by haphazardly parked vehicles.

To address the specific challenges associated with high-risk accident zones, the initiative involves increased police presence during identified time frames. This strategic deployment aims to deter risky behaviors and promptly respond to emergencies, contributing to an overall reduction in accidents and fatalities.

In essence, the "Time Card" initiative represents a comprehensive effort by the Karbi Anglong Police and the District Road Safety Committee to revolutionize road safety measures on NH-39 and NH-36. By combining technological innovation with stringent enforcement and heightened vigilance, the initiative seeks to create a safer and more responsible road culture, ultimately saving lives and preventing the devastating consequences of road accidents.
