Assam: Karimganj Police Seize Banned Cough Syrup Bottles Worth Crores, Nab 2

GUWAHATI: Police in Karimganj conducted a big operation along the Assam-Tripura border, which led to the seizure of a mind-boggling quantity of banned cough syrup bottles said to be worth several crores.

More than 95,000 bottles of cough syrup were recovered in the seizure made by police in the Karimganj district, even as two persons involved in the smuggling bid have been arrested.

The two persons arrested in this connection were identified as Bhabesh Kumar and Saminur Islam.

A team from the Karimganj police acted on an intelligence input and stopped three trucks for checking near the Assam-Tripura border in the Churaibari area of the district.

When the vehicles were searched, the police were able to uncover and seize a total of 95,360 cough syrup bottles. The seized bottles were calculated to be worth several crores of rupees.

A police official connected with the operation said, “We have intercepted three trucks at the Churaibari check gate and recovered 95,360 bottles of cough syrup. We have also apprehended two persons. Further investigation is ongoing.”

On Monday, the Tripura Police nabbed an individual and managed to seize a huge quantity of banned cough syrup bottles valued at Rs 1.35 crore at the Churaibari Checkpost along the Assam-Tripura border.

Bhanupada Chakraborty, the North Tripura District Superintendent of Police, while providing details on the incident, stated that they were in possession of information late Sunday night that a truck with a number registered in Assam was carrying a large quantity of banned cough syrup from Assam into Tripura.

Taking swift action on the information, security measures were tightened, intercepting the truck in North Tripura District’s Churaibari check post.

When searched, it was apparent at first glance that the vehicle was carrying approximately 500 sacks of wheat. However, a thorough search revealed that 84 cartons which contained a total of 26,870 bottles of Eskuf, a banned cough syrup, were concealed behind the wheat sacks.

The banned items were seized immediately, and the driver a identified as a resident of Hyderabad named Sahanuj was arrested.

The SP informed that the black market value of the seized contraband is estimated to be around Rs 1.35 crores. An investigation into the matter is being conducted by the authorities.
