LAKHIMPUR: ‘Khel Maharan,’ the ambitious initiative of the Government of Assam, aiming at cultivating and nurturing sports talents from the grassroots level, kick-started in Lakhimpur district on Wednesday. The initiative is a testament to the State government’s commitment to promote the sports excellence across Assam. It envisions a multi-stage sporting spectacle, spanning various administrative tiers, to unearth and foster budding athletes. A diverse range of five sporting disciplines, namely Athletics (100m, 200m, 400m & 800m), Football, Kabaddi, Volleyball, and Kho-Kho, will be showcased throughout the competitions. The competitions will be held in four stages, which include Gram Panchayat/Urban Local Body (ULB)/Wards level, Legislative Assembly Constituency level; district level; and culminating in the grand State level. The events of the initiative have been categorized into four age groups, such as Under 19 (Men), Under 19 (Women), Above 19 (Men), and Above 19 (Women).
Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah, Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka, District Commissioner Sumit Sattawan, District Sports Officer Sami Saikia, social worker Phanidhar Baruah encouraged the sports talents by attending the Khel Maharan events organized at Junubosti High School playground under Ujjalpur Gaon Panchayat, Panigaon Model HS School playground under Panigaon Gaon Panchayat, Laluk HS School playground under Nij-Laluk Gaon Panchayat on Wednesday. In 85 Gaon Panchayats of Lakhimpur district, events under Khel Maharan will continue until November 15, with two-day long sports events in each and every Gaon Panchayat.
