Assam: Kokrajhar Police Arrested KLO Linkmen On Extortion Charges

Guwahati: The Kokrajhar police have arrested two linkmen in association with banned insurgent outfit Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) on extortion charges on Saturday in Kokrajhar

The suspects identified as Bishnu Rai and Tapas Rai were arrested from the Serfanguri area of the district.

The Kamtapur Liberation Organisation is a far-left militant organization based in Northeast India whose objective was to liberate the Kamtapur nation from India.

The proposed state is to comprise six districts in West Bengal and four contiguous districts of Assam which are Cooch Behar, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, North and South Dinajpur and Malda, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Dhubri and Goalpara, Kishanganj districts in Bihar, and Jhapa District in Nepal. The KLO was formed to address problems of the Koch Rajbongshi people such as large-scale unemployment, land alienation, perceived neglect of the Kamtapuri language, identity, and grievances of economic deprivation.

According to sources, the accused KLO linkmen allegedly attempted to extort money from a businessman, namely Sunil Mandal.

On the basis of Sunil's complaint, police acted swiftly and arrested the KLO cadres from Narabari.

A case under relevant sections has also been registered against them. An investigation to unearth further linkages is on.

Earlier, Jeevan Singha, the self-styled chief of the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), a banned terror outfit, had appealed to the President and the Prime Minister to meet the outfit's longstanding demand for a state of Kamtapur.In a video released ahead of Independence Day on 14 August, by the outfit, Singha was seen making the plea in an undisclosed location with armed cadres around him.
