KOKRAJHAR: The number of malaria cases has seen a significant rise in the state since the start of the monsoons. Although the increase has been noticed in other parts of the state as well, the highest increase has been noticed in the state of Kokrajhar which shares a border with the neighbouring Bhutan.

According to reports, the Kokrajhar district has detected 82 cases of malaria since the beginning of 2023. The state recorded a total of 203 cases in the same timeline, making Kokrajar a hotspot for malaria. Although it is mainly a summer and monsoon time disease in the state with almost no reports from all other districts during the winter season. But few parts of the district report incidents of Malaria infection even in the winter months.

Experts put the blame on the unhealthy living conditions, especially in the forest areas of the district leading to an increase in Malaria numbers. The lack of preventive measures in these locations is a major reason for the spread of the illness. The health officials mentioned that there has been a sudden increase in malaria cases in the last few days. They also mentioned the lack of any options for mosquito eradication in the region. The local people hardly have knowledge regarding the disease and never use mosquito nets.

The officials also mentioned that although the month of July sees a peaking in the instances of malaria in the state, this year the number is higher than the previous years. Kokrajhar reported 23 cases in the month of July 2021 and 95 in 2022. And with the number of cases reported recently, the number might increase many from its previous numbers. Some instances of malaria have also been noticed in the capital city in the past few days.
