KHERONI: The lack of a proper bridge on the Kopili River has become a major cause of concern for the people of the two districts of the state. People of West Karbi Anglong and Hojai districts have to use boats to cross the river, which becomes very risky in the monsoons.

People from the region are forced to use boats to cross the Kopili River between the Sildubi Ghat which comes in the West Karbi Anglong District and the Jamuna-Seat Ghat which comes in the Hojai District of the state. These small wooden boats that people are forced to use, lack any safety features, thus putting the lives of the travellers at risk every time they cross the river.

Even small children including students, elderly people and ill people are forced to use these boats. The raging water of the river during the monsoons makes it impossible for the children to attend their regular school or the regular work of other people. So the locals have raised their voices in demand of a proper RCC bridge in the region. While mentioning that it is essential for the development of the people of the region, they mentioned the pathetic conditions of the people, especially during the monsoons.

Meanwhile, the rise in the levels of water in the Brahmaputra River has led to a temporary suspension of the ferry services between Jorhat and Majuli. The ferry services to both Kamalabari and Aphalamukh ghats remain suspended till further notice. Heavy rains in parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Upper Assam have led to an increase in the water levels in recent times in the Brahmaputra River. It can be mentioned that the river is flowing above the danger mark in the Nimatighat locality of Jorhat, from where the ferries for Majuli start their journey.
