Guwahati: Biman Chandra Chetia, the principal of North Lakhimpur College, has been suspended after some screenshots of the objectionable conversation and photographs of him and a woman went viral on social media.

Following this, the president of the governing body of north Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) requested the Higher Education Department to initiate action against the principal.

As per reports, Ranjan Kumar Bora has been appointed as Principal-in-charge and DDO of the college till the matter is resolved.

On Thursday, students organizations like the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU), AJYCP, North Lakhimpur regional unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), NSUI, and others demanded the suspension of the Principal of North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous).

In support of the demand, the activists of the organizations initiated protest programmes at the main gate of the college.

The Lakhimpur district unit of AASU submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding the suspension of the principal for degrading the academic environment of the college.

ABVP submitted its memorandum to the president of the College Management and Development Committee with the same demand. The organizations sent the copies of memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur, Education Minister, Chief Minister, and Governor of Assam.

However, the Principal said that he had become a victim of a well-hatched conspiracy against him.

He also added that an unscrupulous racket had hacked his Facebook account and did so from the fake account to destroy him socially. In this connection, the Principal filed a case at North Lakhimpur Police Station yesterday.

Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, through his Twitter account, declared that the Higher Education Department had already initiated an urgent inquiry into the allegations against the Principal.
