MARIANI: A leopard cub was recovered in an injured condition from the Kakojan Tea Garden located in the Mariani region of the state of Assam on Tuesday. It was shifted to a veterinary care facility, where it later succumbed to its injuries on Wednesday.
The incident had taken place in the Jorhat district of Assam on Tuesday. The forest officials in the Naksari Morngiyal part under the Mariani area received information from the Kakojan Tea Garden located in Deberapar. Following the information, a leopard cub was found in a seriously injured condition under the No 9 Ketle bridge of the garden.
Forest officials rescued the injured cub and made arrangements to shift it to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation And Conservation located in the Panbari region of Kaziranga. Initial medical investigations suggested a broken spine, probably due to an attack.
Following the necessary procedures, the experts tried their level best to take care of the cub. But they ultimately failed in their efforts as the animal passed away while under treatment on Wednesday.
Reports suggested that the leopard cub was attacked by humans leading to fatal injuries. The medical expert with the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation And Conservation Dr Samshul Ali mentioned that several injury marks were noticed on the body of the cub. One of the attacks is expected to have broken the backbone of the leopard cub.
Previously, villagers killed a leopard that attacked and injured three persons in the area, said forest officials on Friday. The incident took place in the Barpathar Tengani area of the Golaghat district. “Upon receiving the information, the local forest staff rushed to the spot and recovered the carcass of the leopard,” said the forest officials. Rajib Kakati, Forest Beat Officer of Barpathar said, “We are now investigating the matter and will take action against the offender as per law”. “The leopard’s carcass was disposed of after post-mortem,” Kakati added.
