Assam: Leprosy Case Detection Campaign in South Salmara-Mankachar

HATSINGIMARI: The district administration of the South Salmara Mankachar district of the state will be conducting a campaign to detect and make people aware of leprosy in the month of November.

Dr Minhaz Choudhury, District Leprosy Officer of South Salmara Mankachar district in Assam called for a press meet to announce the upcoming Leprosy Case Detection Campaign (LCDC) under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP). The Leprosy Case Detection Campaign will commence in the district from November 16 to November 29 over a period of two weeks.

As part of the campaign, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA workers) and other volunteers will visit every household in the district to detect leprosy cases if any. If anyone, during the course of the campaign, shows symptoms of leprosy then the government will provide free treatment to that patient.

The health department needs the help of all the people in this huge campaign to eradicate leprosy from the district. The District Leprosy Officer while addressing the press has sought support from the people in this campaign to eradicate leprosy from the district.

Similar programs are going on across all the districts of the state including a drive to identify and spread awareness regarding leprosy is underway from October 30 to November 12 in the Kamrup Metropolitan District along with the rest of the State. A statement issued by the authorities pointed out that 90 % to 95% of the citizens of the district will be covered under this drive and under the initiative of the District Leprosy Cell, healthcare workers will go from door to door to check for symptoms of the illness and take necessary tests. The district administration has asked the citizens to cooperate with the healthcare workers.

It can be noted that these events are being carried out under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP).
