Assam: Linguistic Minorites Unit of APCC Protest Against Delimitation Draft

LUMDING: The Linguistic Minorities Department of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee addressed the members of the press from Lumding. The convenor of the organisation, Samar Purkayastha expresses discontent regarding the recently published draft for the delimitation of constituencies in the state of Assam by the Election Commission of India.

He alleged that the entire process of delimitation has been initiated according to the aspirations of the party in power and to ensure that their vested interests are fulfilled. The members also mentioned that they will approach the Election Commission of India and put forward their complaints in this regard. The convenor also alleged that with this proposed delimitation, the chief minister of the state has gifted a total of four constituencies to the AIUDF. Adding that the party will be able to claim the Karimganj, Kaziranga and two other constituencies in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections.

In a different press conference, the delimitation process and the draft delimitation of constituencies are being claimed to be measures to safeguard the identity of the indigenous people of Assam but this claim is false and without any foundation, said Upamanyu Hazarika, convenor of Prabajan Virodhi Manch, while addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Tuesday. He said, “Delimitation is always on the basis of population and three independent studies demonstrate that Bangladeshi migrants will become a majority in Assam between 2040 to 2051. Delimitation, which is done on the basis of population, can in no manner be a safeguard as existing constituencies will turn into Bangladeshi majority. Secondly, to assert that the Assam Accord, NRC and Clause 6 safeguards have failed is not only false, but also mischievous. NRC has not failed as yet. Though a large number of foreigners have been included in the NRC, however, proper re-verification of NRC will ensure exclusion of such foreigners.”
