JORHAT: An elephant calf managed to get itself stuck in a water tank in the Marianai region of the Jorhat district of the state. As the forest authorities were late in reaching the spot, local people rescued the wild elephant and ensure that nothing untoward took place.

The incident happened in the Hoolungooree Tea Estate located in Mariani. A herd of wild elephants had ventured into the park in search of food. One of the younger calves fall into a water tank in the park and was not able to make it out by itself. The local people then helped the animal to get out of the pond.

Local people raised concerns as to the late arrival of the officials from the forest department. They also questioned why the department did not due action to enforce the covering of these water tanks so that no one falls inside. It can be noted that this is not the first incident of its type in the region and similar incidents had taken place in the Dihingapara and Kothalguri tea gardens as well.

Meanwhile, wild elephants have continued to create havoc in the Biswanath region of the state in the past few days. The recent floods have created problems for humans and animals alike and animals have ventured out into human-inhibited spots.

With the plains of the Kaziranga National Park being flooded with the waters of the Brahmaputra River, many animals have ventured out of the protected area. In recent times, a herd of elephants that came out of the park has been roaming around in the Biswanath region. The herd entered the Guptakashi locality and terrorised the people of the region. The herd was seen roaming in the regions near the river over the past few days and the local people tried their best to chase the herd away. But the people were unsuccessful in their venture.
