GUWAHATI: In yet another devastating incident, Assam's Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Power project, operated by the National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC), faces a critical setback as a major landslide has led to the blockage of one of its diversion tunnels. This alarming development, which has occurred recently, is causing concerns regarding the project's stability and the surrounding environment.
Reports suggest that the massive landslide effectively closed the No. 1 diversion tunnel located on the left bank of the hydroelectric power project. This unfortunate event has had a ripple effect, causing a significant drop in the water level within the lower part of the project. The closure of this tunnel adds to a growing list of similar incidents, with a total of eight diversion tunnels reported as being closed thus far.
This recent disaster follows closely on the heels of a significant landslide that took place in September of this year, affecting the hills on the right side of the dam. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that, upon the completion of the main dam's construction, the diversion tunnels were supposed to remain closed. However, due to the severity of the September landslide, the main diversion tunnel had to be reopened, adding to the ongoing challenges faced by the project.
The blocking of the diversion tunnel raises serious concerns about the safety and stability of the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Power project. The project is critical for the generation of hydroelectric power and plays a vital role in the region's energy supply. The repeated incidents of landslides and tunnel blockages not only disrupt the power generation but also pose environmental and safety risks, both to the project itself and to the communities in the vicinity.
NHPC and relevant authorities must now address the current situation with utmost urgency. Assessing the structural integrity of the project, implementing effective preventive measures, and taking necessary actions to mitigate further risks are imperative. Additionally, a thorough investigation into the causes of these landslides should be conducted to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Power project faces a critical challenge as a major landslide blocks one of its diversion tunnels, raising concerns about the project's safety and environmental impact. Swift and comprehensive actions are required to address the situation and ensure the long-term stability and functionality of this vital energy generation facility.
