GUWAHATI: A rape accused from Assam, who remained to abscond for some time, has been arrested by the Maharashtra police from Hailakandi.

Acting on a tip-off a team of the Mumbai Crime branch arrived at Hailakandi to nab the heinous crime accused. The local police picked up the accused and handed over him to the investigating Mumbai police team.

The accused has been identified as one Sajjid Ahmed Mazumdar from Dhanipur under the Lala Police Station, Hailakandi.

An official of the Mumbai police told media that a woman filed a complaint against Mazumdar in the Colaba Police Station last year.

Based on her complaint, the police filed a case under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and launched an investigation.

"A woman filed a rape complaint against him ( Mazumdar). Based on the complaint we registered a case against him under section 376 of the IPC. Today, we arrested him taking help from the local police," he added.

Hailakandi's Superintendent of Police Gaurav Upadhyay said Lala police conducted a raid and arrested him from Dhanipur village on Monday.

The accused, Mazumdar has been handed over to the crime branch of Mumbai police and he will be taken to Colaba, said, SP Upadhyay.
