Assam: Man Murdered in Gujarat; Calls for Justice and Worker Safety

GUWAHATI: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 26-year-old man, Tajel Ahmed, originally from Assam's Karimganj district, was allegedly murdered in Vadodara, Gujarat. Tajel, a resident of Lokdas village in Kaliganj, Karimganj, had moved to Gujarat two years ago in search of employment opportunities to support his family financially. He had been working in the kitchen of a Vadodara hospital in the Manjalpur area.

The tragic turn of events began when Saiful Islam, another worker from Assam's Hojai district, joined the same hospital's kitchen staff a few months prior. The hospital authorities had arranged for Saiful's accommodation with Tajel, and everything appeared to be going smoothly until a verbal altercation erupted between the two on October 27.

This dispute, which initially seemed resolved with the intervention of a local resident, escalated later that evening when Saiful allegedly attacked Tajel with a sharp weapon on the terrace of their shared accommodation. Tajel suffered a fatal throat injury, collapsing on the terrace, and succumbed to his wounds shortly after. Concerned individuals residing in the building informed the police, leading to an official visit to the scene and the subsequent transportation of Tajel's body to a local hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Saiful was apprehended by the Manjalpur police with the assistance of railway police on the following day as he attempted to flee from Vadodara. Tajel's father, Ainul Ahmed, arrived in Vadodara to bring his son's remains back to their home village. The grieving father expressed his shock and sorrow over the tragic loss of his son, emphasizing the family's desire for justice.

Tajel's body was transported to Lokdas village, located approximately 70 kilometers from Silchar, and arrived on a Thursday evening. A significant gathering of people assembled outside his home to pay their respects and demand justice for the deceased. Protesters called for Saiful to receive capital punishment for his alleged crime, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the case.

The aggrieved crowd also called upon the Assam government to take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of individuals from the state who travel in search of employment opportunities elsewhere. They emphasized the need for adequate compensation for Tajel's family and sought the intervention of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

In accordance with Islamic tradition, Tajel was laid to rest at a burial site in his village on Thursday night, with thousands of people present to bid farewell to the young man. The tragic incident has sparked widespread calls for justice and renewed attention to the safety and security of workers from Assam as they seek employment opportunities outside their home state.
