Guwahati: A man from Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district in Assam has offered his kidneys to Assam's health and finance minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma who has been diagnosed with a kidney stone.
The man named Biswajit Bhagat, sent a message to the minister expressing his willingness to donate his kidneys if required for the treatment of the minister. Expressing his gratitude to Bhagat, Dr. Sarma shared the message on Twitter. The well-wisher wrote in Assamese: "Elder brother, I am your well-wisher. I have kept my two kidneys for you. If required, I shall proffer them to you selflessly."
Dr Sarma was diagnosed with a kidney stone measuring 3.76 mm on June 14th. However, he has continued with his working schedule despite his illness. He has been visiting different hospitals, COVID-19 care centres, as well as quarantine centres to strengthen the state's fight against the pandemic.
Also, at a time when Assam is reeling under the devastating impact of floods, the minister was also seen visiting and checking on the flood-affected areas of Kaziranga -- which is his first visit to the National Park during the monsoon season.
The Health Minister travelled from Mihimukh to Bagori in a speed boat. The Agriculture Minister Atul Bora and State Forest and Environment Minister Parimal Suklabaidya accompanied him. While 136 animals have been rescued from the national park, as many as 108 animals (including nine rhinoceroses) have died to heavy floods.
The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Sunday with five more persons dead taking the toll to 84. Meanwhile, the main rivers and their tributaries were flowing above the danger level at various places across the State. Personnel of NDRF, SDRF and the respective district administration are carrying out rescue operations at various places. Flood-related casualties have been reported from Baghbar in Barpeta district; Baganpara in Baksa district; Bilasipara in Dhubri district; Mayong in Morigaon district; and Kaliabor in Nagaon district.
