GUWAHATI: In a horrific incident of mob lynching in Assam's Dibrugarh district, a mob brutally attacked a man and set him on fire after the man killed a minor boy.
The incident took place on Saturday 12 March in the Rohmoria region of Dibrugarh, Assam.
The man burnt alive has been identified as Sunil Tanti of 35 years old from the Dhalajan tea estate in Rohmoria.
According to reports Sunil was charged with killing a 5-year-old minor boy in the same locality.
A senior police officer informed that the murder accused Sunil had attacked the minor boy with a machete which led to the death of the child.
Following the incident, a furious mod went on to attack Sunil Tanti with a sharp weapon and rods and set him on fire. The unidentified mob taking advantage of the situation attacked the man.
Other locals of the area who are tea garden workers also attacked the murder accused and got involved in the mob lynching incident on Saturday.
On getting informed about the incident, Dibrugarh SP (Superintendent of Police) Shwetank Mishra along with Chachua Circle Inspector and Rohmoria police station OC reached the incident spot.
Later the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Forces) officials also arrived at the scene.
As per the preliminary probe, Dibrugarh SP informed that children were playing in the area of Sunil Tanti who suddenly got angry and murdered the kid by slitting his throat.
Based on the statement by the locals, Sunil was mentally not stable and as he killed the small boy the villagers tried to stop him and started attacking him.
Officials informed that the bodies of Sunil Tanti and the five-year-old have been sent post mortem reports and no arrest has been made till now.
Meanwhile, an investigation has been initiated by the police to find out the cause of the brutal attack and to nab the mob entering the scene.
Inquiry is underway on both the lynching case and the murder case of 5 year old.
