Guwahati: Senior Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Brindaban Goswami and Mangaldai Lok Sabha MP Dilip Kumar Saikia have become the latest political stalwarts in Assam to test positive for the dreaded coronavirus on Thursday, September 3.

Brindaban Goswami's wife Labanya Goswami also tested positive for the novel coronavirus. As per reports, both husband and wife shall be taken to Guwahati for their treatment. As per reports, Assam's health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made the necessary arrangements for their treatment in Guwahati. The duo shall be quarantined at home today and taken to Guwahati tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the authorities at Guwahati's GMCH have said that former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is now recovering from the coronavirus disease and he has reportedly returned to a "stable" state. GMCH authorities are looking to release him within the next 3-4 days are there has been a marked improvement in his health.

This has also been corroborated by Assam's health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has said that the former CM's vitals have returned to "normal" following a dip in his oxygen levels.

Another MP from Assam, Topon Kumar Gogoi of the BJP who represents Jorhat Lok Sabha Constituency, was also administered plasma therapy and oxygen following a dip in his levels.

Assam COVID-19 Update:

The political leaders have tested positive amid a sharp spike in the number of coronavirus cases across the state. Guwahati recorded the highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases on Wednesday after 924 cases were detected in the city in a single day.

On the other hand, 3,555 fresh positive cases were found out of the 47,744 tests conducted in Assam on Wednesday. With this, the positivity rate reached 7.44 percent -- a worrying number.

While Nagaon district counts for 236 cases, Dibrugarh and Baksa reported 213 and 200 Coronavirus cases, respectively.
