HOWRAGHAT: Tension prevails in Manja town, around 17 kilometres from Diphu, since Tuesday following the alleged rape of a minor on the night of October 23 during the Navami celebration. Parents, relatives and people of the locality have alleged that the minor was kidnapped by the rapist on a bike from the puja pandal after he doped her.

Later the victim, aged around 16 years, was found near the river bank in an unconscious condition by her parents and family members on Tuesday. She was rushed to Diphu Medical College and Hospital by her parents, after informing the Manja police. A formal complaint was registered by the father of the victim with the help of student and social organizations.

Sensing massive public anger, the key accused, Manu Ali, aged around 26 years, surrendered before police. A large number of people from nearby areas, including members of student and women organizations, social activists gathered in Manja police station and demanded stern action against the offender.

On Wednesday, thousands of people gathered in Manja police station demanding the arrest of the other accomplices, insisting that the victim was gang raped. An agitated mob vandalized the house of Manu Ali. However, with the quick response of the police, the situation was brought under control. A senior police officer informed the media that police could not record the victim’s statement due to her health condition.
