DARRANG: A tense situation prevailed at Sipajhar in the Darrang district of Assam, after a married woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday.
The incident reportedly happened at Ghopa village in Darrang’s Sipajhar.
The deceased married woman has been identified as Bhonita Deka.
Reacting to the incident, locals accused Bhonita's husband and in-laws of torturing her and demanding dowry, which is said to be the reason behind the death.
Police personnel were deployed to prevent any kind of untoward incident in the locality, following the chaotic situation now prevailing in the area.
Meanwhile, there are reports that the Sipajhar police have arrested three people in connection with the incident, including husband Kishore Baruah.
A day earlier, on Monday, a similar incident occurred when the dead body of a married woman was found under mysterious conditions in Assam’s Cachar district.
Family members of the deceased alleged that her husband and in-laws have been harassing her for dowry and suspected that she was murdered by them.
Sources claimed that the husband and in-laws of the woman had been allegedly torturing her for several months.
It has been alleged that it was a pre- planned murder but the husband’s family tried to make it look like a suicide.
Fuelling the speculation, the accused family is known to be absconding following the incident.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered in connection to the recovery of the body of the woman under mysterious conditions.
Earlier, on March 20, a mother of two children committed suicide due to dowry-related issue in Assam’s Dakhin Kamrup.
The incident took place in Dakshin Kamrup’s Goroimari area where the woman drank poison as she was physically assaulted on several occasions by her husband because her family was unable to fulfill her in-laws’ demands for dowry.
The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Jayanpha Khatun.
Incidents of dowry- related deaths are on the rise in the state. Every other day, a woman is found dead under mysterious circumstances and in most cases, the family members of the deceased allege that dowry demands are behind the deaths.
