GUWAHATI : Over the past few days, residents of Hailakandi has seen massive soil erosion along the dyke of Katakhal river in Matijuri. A total of more than 50 families here are living in anxiety as the embankment of the river is on the verge of a large scale soil erosion.

As per the locals of Matijuri and its adjacent villages, there has been large scale soil depletion in the Hailakandi area. Few days ago, four houses and a road were immersed by the river after a 200 metre portion of the embankment collapsed in the area. This gave rise to an extremely panicky situation among the locals, worried about their uncertain future.

The people in the area are of the view that the authority is not concerned about their suffering. They claimed that the water resource department is least bothered and no actions has been taken by the department to prevent this calamity. This laid back attitude of the government is scaring the locals and if proper implementation is not being adopted to prevent further destruction, it may result in a democratic protest movement, stated a local.

They also informed that, apart from Matijuri, there is a high risk of depredation in areas such as Nimaichandpur, Rajyeshwarpur, Ratanpur and Basdahar. These areas are under the Hailakandi assembly constituency. The local people demands the government to repair the embankment as early as possible.

The residents also asked for compensation for the families who lost their properties in the recent collapse. The people who lost their houses in the incident are living without any shed and are continuously seeking help from the government. The residents are requesting CM Hemanta Biswa Sarma to look into the matter. Zakir Hussain Laskar, Hailakandi AIUDF assures that necessary steps will be soon undertaken by the concerned departments.
