A meeting on substance abuse among youth and role of community was held in the office of the Sub-Divisional (Civil) Office on Tuesday which was convened by Preeti Kumari, SDO(Civil) and being attended by representatives of religious centres, community leaders, student leaders and specially the head of educational institutions and rehabilitation centres.

TINSUKIA: A meeting on substance abuse among youth and role of community was held in the office of the Sub-Divisional (Civil) Office on Tuesday which was convened by Preeti Kumari, SDO(Civil) and being attended by representatives of religious centres, community leaders, student leaders and specially the head of educational institutions and rehabilitation centres.

The SDO stressed on the point that the menace of drugs demand should be stopped at the source so that supply line is checked. Substance abuse starts from teen years and the repercussions are unfathomable, she stated adding that that apart from administrative and police efforts the society also plays a major tool in addressing the issue of substance abuse among their own community, especially the religious establishment like temples, mosques, churches, monastery etc while colleges also play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the students and stringent action should be taken against the perpetrators within the campus wherein morality can be adhered to the alleged substance abusers or general public by counselling and guiding them to the rightful path. She also added that the administration will assist in facilitating the needs like engaging counsellors or psychologists if needed so. The SDO also pointed out that Rehabilitation centres should undertake maximum awareness activities in their fight against the menace and it will be one of the criteria for renewing the license from henceforth. She urged the participants to generate awareness in their own capacity and help in saving families and the society as a whole.
