Assam: Minor Girl Allegedly Raped During Durga Puja; Locals Demand Action

KARBI ANGLONG: Amid the festive fervour of Durga Puja, a horrifying incident of sexual assault shook the Karbi Anglong district of Assam. Reports suggest that a minor girl was allegedly raped during the Navami night celebrations on October 23, in the village of Manja.

The accused, identified as Manu Ali, has been apprehended by the police following the incident. Family members of the victim promptly lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against the alleged perpetrator at the Manja Police Station on Tuesday night.

In the wake of the heinous crime, locals from Manja, along with the victim's family, have been demanding strict action against the accused, calling for his execution. To express their outrage and seek justice, they staged a significant protest in front of the Manja police station earlier today.

According to the victim's family members, the accused, Manu Ali, lured the girl away to a remote location away from the Puja Mandap (place of worship) and sexually assaulted her. After the heinous act, he allegedly left the victim's lifeless body on the banks of a nearby river, where it was discovered around 12:30 am.

Meanwhile, allegations have been made against the locals of Manja for vandalizing Manu Ali's residence in Hidim Teron village, along with a few other houses in the vicinity. As a group of men caused disruption in the area, women and children reportedly fled the region in response to the turmoil created by the vandals. The incident has triggered widespread concern and calls for justice in the region, with the hope that the legal process will prevail.

In another incident, a 12-year-old boy in Dhubri district jumped into a river after he was disappointed for not getting new clothes on Durga Puja, officials said on Tuesday. The incident happened in Golakganj area on Monday and the minor boy identified as Suman Roy, is a student of class 8 at Gaikhowa Gandhigram Middle School . The boy’s family revealed that he was in a condition of despondency as a result of his disappointment. Suman made the dramatic decision to plunge into the Gadadhar River due to this fact, shocking everyone around him. The police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel arrived at the location after receiving information from nearby homeowners and immediately initiated rescue efforts.
