GUWAHATI: Six minor wrestlers from Assam, along with their coach, experienced food poisoning and heat exhaustion while travelling on the Brahmaputra Mail. The young athletes, all girls, were en route Assam following their participation in a junior wrestling competition held in Bhopal from October 1 to 7.

The group had reservations up to Patna on a single train. After their arrival in Patna on Tuesday afternoon, they had a meal near the railway station before boarding the Brahmaputra Mail. Since they lacked reservations on this particular train, they boarded a general compartment, despite it being crowded. The combination of intense heat and humidity, coupled with the large number of passengers, took a toll on their health at Kiul railway station.

In an effort to provide relief, Coach Pappu Kumar relocated them to an air-conditioned coach. However, their health did not improve, and they subsequently lost consciousness. When the train reached Jamalpur railway station, the unwell wrestlers were promptly transferred to a railway hospital, where their condition is steadily improving.

The affected individuals have been identified as Jyoti (15), Mausami (13), Sanjeeta (14), Pranita (13), Pribkar Das (17), and Sunita (16).

Sanjay Kumar, in charge of the railway hospital in Jamalpur, stated, "We have administered initial treatment to the players and the coach. Their health is on the mend, and they are out of danger."

This incident involved a group of 34 male and female wrestlers who had traveled to Madhya Pradesh to compete in the national junior wrestling competition.

Earlier in September, a food poisoning incident came to light in Dhakuakhana subdivision of the Lakhimpur district in the state which over 100 people were affected and they had to undergo treatment at Dhakuakhana Subdivisional Civil Hospital and Dhemaji District Civil Hospital.

As per information received, the incident took place at No. 1 Thekeraguri village under the subdivision on Saturday night. Some people, who consumed prasad served at a religious event at the village Namghar held in connection with ‘Bhadiya Nam-Prasanga’, suffered from stomach ache, vomiting and loose motion. Around 2:00 am, as many as six people of the village were admitted at Dhakuakhana Subdivisional Civil Hospital as their health condition severely deteriorated.
