Guwahati: Congress MLA from Assam Rajdeep Gowala was on Friday expelled by the Grand Old Party for a period of six years for "anti-party" activities. The MLA, who represents Lakhimpur Assembly Constituency in the Barak Valley, has been accused of liaising with BJP leaders ahead of the 2021 polls (to be held on April 2021).

"The Congress president has approved the proposal of the expulsion of Rajdeep Gowala, MLA, Assam, from the party for a period of six years for indulging in anti-party activities," KC Venugopal, All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary wrote in a statement, informing about Gowala's ouster..

Earlier, Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA) Convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma had claimed that Gowala and other Congress MLAs would be inducted into the BJP. The Minister made this claim in the lead up to the Rajya Sabha elections.
