Assam: Mother-daughter Duo Killed by Lightning in Tinsukia

GUWAHATI: In Assam's Tinsukia district, a tragic incident occurred during heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms as a mother and her daughter lost their lives after being struck by lightning on Saturday. The incident took place in Tinhuti village under the jurisdiction of the Lekhapani police station. The victims, identified as Mamon Pange and Janmoti Pange, were unable to survive the lightning strike despite being promptly taken to a nearby hospital by local residents. The resident doctors, unfortunately, declared them brought dead.

This unfortunate incident adds to a series of lightning-related fatalities in the region. Just a few days prior, on June 17th, lightning claimed the life of another individual in Karimganj district. The victim, Priyo Ranjan Das, was struck by lightning in the Ratabari constituency of Karimganj. Lightning strikes have become a significant concern due to the ongoing heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity in Assam.

Moreover, the state has been grappling with a flood crisis for the past couple of weeks, exacerbating the situation caused by incessant rainfall. The combination of floods and continuous rainfall has resulted in widespread damage and disruption in various areas of Assam.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast for the next five days, indicating thunderstorms and lightning activity at isolated locations across the Northeast, including Assam. Additionally, the IMD predicts that the day temperatures in Assam are likely to be above normal by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius for the next two days. From the third day onward, heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram. On the fourth and fifth days, the IMD anticipates heavy to very heavy rain in isolated areas of Assam and Meghalaya, while Arunachal Pradesh may experience heavy rainfall at isolated places.

These weather predictions emphasize the need for caution and preparedness among the residents of Assam. Authorities and individuals alike must take appropriate measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the population. Lightning strikes pose a significant risk during thunderstorms, and it is crucial to seek shelter in safe locations and avoid open areas. Furthermore, the ongoing flood crisis necessitates swift action to provide relief and support to affected communities.
