TANGLA: Saneki Deka, former prominent leader and an active participant of the Assam movement, passed away after a brief illness at her residence in Tangla town of Udalguri district on Saturday evening. She was 78.
Born in Kamarpara village near Kalaigaon of undivided Darrang district she took a torchbearer's role in All Assam Students' Union (AASU) led six-year-long Assam movement. She was instrumental in mobilizing women of greater Tangla area in the movement and led it from the front. She also published a poem titled 'Maa' to ignite the fire of revolution among the people. She was also conferred with the title of 'Aaoiti' by Akashwani Guwahati. She was a lifetime member of Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX). She was also active participant in Anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) protests despite her ill health. Assistant General Secretary of AASU, Jayanta Kumar Bhattacharjya mourned her demise, and said, "She led it from the front during the hour of crisis. She has left a rich legacy and her ideal of nationalism will live forever. Her honesty, devotion, perseverance and uncompromising fighting spirit will always be a source of courage, inspiration and determination for us."
Her death has cast a pall of gloom in greater Tangla area and her demise was widely mourned by several organizations including AASU's Tangla regional unit. The members of the unit offered tributes to Deka by offering floral tributes and laying gamosa and the organization's flag over her wreath. The regional unit will also put the flag at half-mast for three days to mourn her death. Besides Tangla Press Club, All Koch Rajbongshi Students' Union (AKRSU) Udalguri West chapter president Hemanta Bora Koch also offered condolence to bereaved family members.
