SILCHAR: After a night of turmoil following the brutal murder of an eighteen-year-old girl, Silchar police on Wednesday picked up one Pinak Suklabaidya, boyfriend of the victim. Police had also detained 11 persons in charge of vandalism and stone pelting at security personnel on Tuesday night at Rangirkhari point of the town on Tuesday night. To disperse the violent mob, police first resorted to lathi charge followed by blank fire.

The mutilated body of Pinky Roy, 18, was recovered from the top floor of an under construction building at Dhwarbond on Tuesday morning. Pinky, who worked in a boutique, was missing since Saturday night. Her family lodged a missing person report with Rangirkhari PS. On Tuesday morning, the construction workers of the building first noticed the mutilated, half burnt body of Pinky.

After post mortem at the SMCH, the body was handed over to the family. Local residents blocked the Rangirkhari point in the evening. Meanwhile, a group of unknown youths shouting ‘Silchar police murdabad’, ‘Jai Sri Ram’ arrived at the spot and soon the scenario turned volatile. The mob attacked a car, pelted stones at the policemen injuring a number of security jawans. Police first resorted to lathi charge but as the youths, some of them visibly intoxicated, became more violent, police finally blank fired.

On Tuesday, family members of Pinky said they were suspicious of Pinak Suklabaidya for various reasons. They further alleged that some staff of Rangirkhari police demanded Rs 500 as bribe from Pinky’s father for writing the FIR.
