Assam : Mysterious Death Of An Inmate Puts Concerned Authorities Under Speculation

GUWAHATI : A prisoner died inside the cell of Haflong sub-jail in Dima Hasao district of Assam. The puzzling death of the inmate has raised question against the role of the concerned authority.

The incident has directly pointed fingers towards the medical negligence inside the custody. The deceased has been identified as Raju, who was 45 years old, a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Amroha district. The deceased was a truck driver by profession.

He was under the Haflong sub-jail custody for past one month. As per the reports, he fell sick on the 19th of December, following which he was taken to the Haflong Civil hospital. However, the doctors declared him as brought dead. The body was sent to Diphu Medical College for an autopsy.

The superintendent of Haflong Civil hospital, Dr. Ajit Kakati informed that, Raju was dead before reaching the hospital premises as a result of which the medical authority could not help him with treatment. As the body did not have any injury marks or bruises, it was taken to Diphu Medical College that has a forensic laboratory.

Once the autopsy report comes out, the cause of that will be revealed. Some locals also alleges that the jailor of Haflong sub jail, runs the custody as per his convenience, ignoring all the set rules and regulations declared by the government.

Few sources from the jail also mentioned about the irregularity in medical checkups for the inmates, unhealthy environment of the jail and poor food quality. As per sources, Raju was going through some illness from some weeks but his condition worsened on 19th December.

A similar case was reported this month in Barpeta district jail where person died inside the jail under unidentified condition. He was inside the custody for 7 years, imprisoned in a murder case. He was brought dead by the doctors as well.
