Assam: NIA To Hear Akhil Gogoi’s CAA Protest Case On 25 April

GUWAHATI: April 25 has been set aside by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court as the hearing date for the two complaints brought against Akhil Gogoi during the Assamese anti-CAA protests in December 2019.

Earlier today, Akhil Gogoi, the leader of the Raijor Dal, and Sivasagar's legislator made an appearance before the NIA court in relation to the anti-CAA protest. According to reports in the media, the other suspects in the case, Dharjya Konwar, Bitu Sonowal, and Manas Konwar, also showed up in court today.

Gogoi alleged that there was a plan by the government to keep him detained throughout the Assam Assembly session. The Supreme Court previously heard Akhil Gogoi's bail request on March 20 in response to the NIA's accusations that he incited violence during the Assam anti-CAA protests.

A panel made up of Justices Pankaj Mittal and V. Ramasubramanian heard the case. The court did not, however, rule on the matter. According to reports in the media, the Supreme Court extended Assam Legislator Akhil Gogoi's protection from arrest on March 3 until March 13 in connection with a case involving anti-CAA protests and alleged Maoist affiliations.

The Raijor Dal leader is allegedly the mastermind behind Maoist activity in Assam, according to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

In the month of February, the NIA informed the Supreme Court that Legislator Gogoi could not be released on bail since he is the state's top organiser of Maoist activities.

During the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) agitation in Assam in December 2019, MLA Akhil Gogoi, who was outspoken against the BJP government, filed a petition with the Supreme Court challenging a decision by the Gauhati High Court on February 9 allowing an NIA court to move forward with the framing of charges in one of the two cases against him.
