LAKHIMPUR: The reluctance on the part of traders and general public of Lakhimpur district with regard to accepting Rs 10 and Rs 20 coins due to suspicion about their genuineness has drawn the attention of the district administration. In connection with this, the District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur district has issued an advisory order to null the suspicion.

The order issued vide No. E-78332/MJ 31/402/2023 MAG-LKPR by the District Magistrate has clarified that the Reserve Bank of India has put into circulation, the coins of Rs 10 and Rs 20, which are under the Government of India. These coins have distinctive features to reflect various themes of economic, social and cultural values and are introduced from time to time.

“As per Reserve Bank of India, these coins are legal tender and can be accepted for transactions without any hesitation and hence, the coins can be circulated in the market as well as among the general members of the public,” the order stated.

The order further said, “Reserve Bank has also advised banks to accept coins for transactions and exchange at all their branches. Further, the Rs 10 and the Rs 20 coins are national currency and no one has the right to refuse as the Government of India promises to pay the value of the currency to the bearer. According to RBI rules, those who refuse to accept the Indian currency shall be liable for action under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.” In view of the above context, the order advised to all the traders and general public to accept the Rs 10 and Rs 20 coins as genuine legal tender. The non-acceptance of these coins by anyone will invite punishment under the law including under section 124-A (Sedition), 489-A and 489-E of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
