Assam : Nonchalant Behaviour Of Nurse Burns Infant's Face

GUWAHATI : In a shocking episode, a new born baby suffered burn injuries after hot oil was accidentally spilled on the infant's body. The incident took place in Mangaldoi Civil Hospital in Assam.

The infant had to suffer because of complete nonchalant behaviour of a nurse in the hospital. The nurse was allegedly doing the process very casually and in a very close proximity to the baby.

According to the doctors, the face has been burnt to a certain point and not completely. The nurse who carelessly handled her job is working under the hospital's child care unit. As per the sources, she was heating oil near the infant and unfortunately few drops fell onto the baby's face, hands and neck.

The infant was just one week old and is currently undergoing treatment in the Mangaldoi Civil Hospital for the burn injuries. The baby was born on 4th of December, 2022 to a woman named Bidhangshri Rabha.

The incident took place while the nurse was heating the oil to apply it on the baby's umbilical cord stump. People gathered in front of the hospital following the incident.

The parents of the baby informed that, the nurse pressurised them not to disclose the matter outside. Similar cases of carelessness by nurses in the state has been reported earlier as well.

In the middle of this year, two nurses got suspended in Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital for wrongly registering the gender of a new born. The nurses were identified as Juli Barua and Ruby Hazarika. A panic situation had occurred in the hospital due to the gross negligence of the nurses.

The mother gave birth to a girl child, while in all medical documentation it was registered as a boy. As per the sources, one of the nurse announced that it was a male and without cross checking, the other nurse cleaned the baby and gave it to the mother.

There is a column to check deformity before handing over the babies to their mother in the Delivery Note, but the nurses in this case neglected that part, resulting in their suspension.
