NAGAON: Nowgong Girls’ College organized the All Assam Binoy Chandra Bora Memorial inter-college/ university debate competition on the theme ‘Oil palm cultivation can be a sustainable source of socio-economic development of Assam today’.

The event commenced with an inaugural speech delivered by the convenor, Sankar Jyoti Bora. Dr Kulen Chandra Das, principal of the college, lit the ceremonial lamp and delivered the welcome address. He welcomed the participants who came from different institutions, and emphasized the need for critical thinking and diligence among the students. Saponti Bordoloi chaired the event as the speaker and senior lawyer Mukul Prasad Borthakur and Indramohan Bora chaired as the judges.

Over 26 participants from different educational institutions such as Nowgong Girls’ College, Nowgong College (Autonomous), ADP College, Kaliabor College, BKB College, Puranigudam, Nonoi College, Lanka Mahavidyalaya, Morigaon College, JB College, Institute of Mass Communication and Media Studies, Guwahati, Gauhati University, Government Ayurvedic College participated in the event.

The members of treasury bench were highly eloquent and presented the rationale behind the benefits of sustainable oil palm cultivation and social responsibility in the socio-economic development of Assam. This led to a wide spectrum of contrasting arguments from the opposition bench ranging from environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, health hazards which shall in turn affect the socio-economic development of Assam.

Dimpimoni Dutta from JB College won the best debater followed by Sudipta Sakia from JB College who was the second-best debater. The best team was awarded to JB College while the Institute of Mass Communication and Media Studies, Guwahati (IMCMS) bagged the prize for runners-up team. The winners were awarded with trophies, cash prizes and certificates.
