GUWAHATI: In a recent development, the government of Assam has decided to do away with the citizenship proof of NRC (National Register of Citizens) previously needed while issuing a caste certificate to the citizens.
On Saturday 2nd April, the major decision to remove NRC or citizenship proof as an essential requirement in issuing caste certificates was taken in a session of the state cabinet.
State Cabinet Minister Kashab Mahanat addressing the media stated that the Assam cabinet has given its indication on simply issuing the caste certificates to the citizens without the requirement of any citizenship proof.
The decision was taken for the benefit of the people of Assam so that they easily get the certificates that they need for various educational and other related purposes.
It is also informed that from now onwards caste certificates will be issued to students during their schooling so that it can ease up the admission process.
The minister said that earlier, the applicant has to show their citizenship proof or the NRC list to get a caste certificate but now the government wants to do away with such documents.
He added that from now onwards the concerned authority will issue a caste certificate to a person if he or she can produce the caste certificates of their parents.
Mahanta further said that there will be an inspection needed if an applicant produces a caste certificate of parents.
It is important to note that if he or she is unable to provide their parents' caste certificates then in such case an investigation will be done by the adequate authority.
The minister on mentioning providing caste certificates to school students said that from now onwards the administration will reach out to the class 9 and 10 students in their respective educational institutions to issue the caste certificates.
In addition, the cabinet also took the decision of providing caste certificates to people from the Sarania Kachari group of ethnic tribal communities.
