GUWAHATI : A search operation was carried on in several regions of the district on 30th of December. A huge gang was apprehended during the raid. Nagaon police team busted a racket involved in the theft of crude oil. 

Total 10 people were identified and nabbed who were related with the theft. The members were apprehended from Nagaon, Barpeta, Meghalaya, Golaghat and Guwahati. 

Two oil tankers and four wheeler were seized by the cops. The arrested people has been identified as- Pranjit Bora, Md Sukkur Ali, Bitu Singha, Ashir Uddin Hoque, Tapan Baniya, Sagar Bora, Gopal Dey, Narayan Sarkar, Emdad Ali aka Bhaiti and Parul Hussain. 

The team who initiated the raid was headed by Rupjyoti Kalita, the additional superintendent of police of Nagaon Crime Control Branch. 

According to sources, these people were stealing oil from oil pipelines of Oil India Limited, since a really long time. It has come to light that, the illegal oil was sold in Meghalaya by this gang. 

Police has revealed that, the prime accuse and the mastermind who has been initiating these illegal activities hail from an area called Merapani situated in Golaghat district. However, an FIR has been launched against the ten accused under IPC section 379 and PDPP Act. 

Apart from that, charges of Petroleum and Minerals Pipeline Amendment Act has also been imposed upon them. Smuggling oil from tankers and selling them outside in a double amount is not a new phenomenon. 

In June this year, Tinsukia police busted a huge oil racket while arresting 4 people in relation with the case. Approximately, 14,000 litres of stolen oil was seized from Dibrugarh district. The Oil India Limited security team had passed on an information regarding the oil smuggling, on which the department initiated a raid. 

The search operation was conducted by DSP of Tinsukia, Hiranya Kumar Borah. The raid was carried on in the Tinsukia district, from where 6,000 litres of stolen oil was was recovered from two vehicles.
