GUWAHATI: The apex sports body in the state of Assam, the Assam Olympic Association organised an event to felicitate the star athletes of the state on Thursday. Sarbanada Sonowal was present for the event to felicitate and interact with the sportspersons from multiple disciplines on the day.
The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, who was also the former chief minister of the state of Assam also holds the position of the president of the Assam Olympic Association. He felicitated the star athletes with a traditional Assamese gamocha and japi, a memento and a cheque of Rs 50000 each to the selected athletes during the occasion.
The athletes who were honoured during the event include boxer Lovlina Borgohain, who had recently won the International Boxing Association’s World Boxing Championship, Nayanmoni Saikia who was part of the team which won the gold for lawn bowling in the Commonwealth Games and the Hemanta Kalita, who is the Secretary General of the Boxing Federation of India. Several other athletes and coaches were also felicitated during this event.
Speaking on the occasion, the union minister congratulated all the athletes for their impressive performance and suggested them to continuously work towards better results and keep making the state proud. He also mentioned the development in various sports disciplines over the years as well as the growing number of avenues wherein people can showcase their talent in different sports.
He also mentioned the changes made to government policies to further the growth of the sports sector and to create an environment wherein athletes can perform and excel in the global arena. He also mentioned the massive potential in the Northeastern part of the country in terms of different sports while saying that the sportspeople from this region have made the country proud so many times in multiple sports in the international arena.
