Assam: One Drowns In River During 'Goru Bihu' Celebrations

Guwahati: Amid Bihu celebrations, one person drowned in the Ojlasuti River at Gorehagi village in Biswanath Chariali district on Thursday.

According to reports, the deceased who was identified as Nitul Saikia drowned in the river while crossing it after bathing his cow as a part of the rituals of Goru Bihu.

The incident took place at Gorehagi village.

However, locals of the area rescued his body from the river.

On the first day of the seven-day-long Bohag Bihu, it is the cattle, which are given a royal treat, as the day is celebrated as the Goru Bihu or Cow Bihu in the state. A generous bath, an oil and turmeric massage, lavish food and a new attire are offered to the cattle on this day as a mark of gratitude for their tireless service.
